Santa Cruz Ventures backs Farmblox, a local company fighting farm copper theft

Santa Cruz Ventures has added Farmblox to its portfolio, backing a farm automation company headquartered in Santa Cruz. Farmblox builds solar-powered monitoring hardware that connects to sensors growers already own. Its most pointed product is COP-R-LOCK, which detects copper wire theft at irrigation pumps and alerts authorities as it happens. That is a narrower problem than it sounds: copper stripped from pump wiring cost Tulare County growers more than a million dollars in the early months of 2025 alone, and a disabled pump in a dry month is not merely an equipment loss. The product was developed with Bobby Rader, the Porterville police chief and a sixteen-year agricultural crimes specialist — which is an unusual co-development partner for a hardware startup, and the reason it addresses the actual crime rather than a guess at it. The company is led by Nathan Rosenberg, who bootstrapped it on earnings from Minecraft development before pivoting to agriculture, reaching more than fifty customers inside eighteen months. It has raised a $2.5 million seed round led by Hyperplane, with Slow Ventures, MHS Capital and Service Provider Capital participating. Farmblox now serves growers and irrigation districts representing roughly ten per cent of California's irrigated acreage. Santa Cruz Ventures has not disclosed the size of its investment. The local detail worth noting is that this is a Santa Cruz company solving a Central Valley and Salinas Valley problem, funded in part by Santa Cruz capital. Santa Cruz Ventures also took part in Versa Vascular's Series C earlier this year, and the county already has farm-ng building agricultural robots in Watsonville.
