Reservoir buys Contain, adding farm equipment finance to its robotics incubator

Reservoir has acquired Contain, an agricultural finance and data platform, and its founder Nicola Kerslake has joined the firm as a general partner. The deal was announced on 22 June. Terms were not disclosed. Contain ran a financing marketplace connecting startups with growers, more than thirty lenders and more than seventy equipment vendors, alongside a marketplace for preowned indoor farm equipment and an industry data platform. Kerslake previously founded Newbean Capital and launched Indoor Ag-Con, and brings more than a decade in venture capital and agricultural finance. She will chair Reservoir VC's investment committee and help build its next fund. What the acquisition buys is underwriting and market intelligence rather than technology. Reservoir already had the physical half of the problem solved — it runs on-farm incubator sites where companies test machines in commercial crop fields. What it lacked was the financing machinery that gets a working prototype onto a farm that has to justify the purchase. Reservoir describes its focus as "rugged physical AI": AI-enabled hardware that has to survive real field conditions, where the investor needs to understand deployment and unit economics rather than software margins. For Santa Cruz County, Reservoir matters because of geography. Its Salinas site is the nearest place to Watsonville where an agricultural robotics company can test a machine in a commercial crop field rather than a car park, and the county has companies that need exactly that.
