Peregrine Hydrogen wins the first IFA Cultivate Challenge

Peregrine Hydrogen has won the inaugural IFA Cultivate Challenge, the International Fertilizer Association's global startup competition, beating more than 150 applicants from over 40 countries and a shortlist of thirteen. The award was presented in Budapest on 4 June. The company, based on Natural Bridges Drive in Santa Cruz, was recognised for an electrolyser that co-produces hydrogen and sulfuric acid using around half the energy of conventional electrolysis. That second output is the commercial insight. Green hydrogen struggles on price because the electricity to make it is expensive; producing a saleable industrial chemical from the same energy input decouples the economics from the power bill. Sulfuric acid is also central to fertiliser production, which is why a fertiliser industry body was handing out the prize. The technology sits where clean energy meets food supply. Peregrine is one of two companies working on hydrogen and synthetic fuels within about a mile of each other on the Westside, alongside Prometheus Fuels on Swift Street.
